It’s the season of new year’s resolutions!
Not surprisingly, it’s quite common to have personal goals for how to boost your mindset, manage diabetes in another way or just improve minor habits that might make everyday-life with diabetes easier.
Maybe you’ve set some goals for yourself too? Goals that you really want to achieve in the next couple of years?
We’ve asked around in our community, to get to know more about what different types of personal diabetes goals people with type 1 have…Here’s what we found out!
“I want to be better at not panicking, when my numbers get really high”
– Henriette, 25, has type 1 diabetes
Henriette told us her blood sugar levels are generally quite regulated. But – when her blood sugar levels get way too high once in a while, she’d like to be calmer, take a deep breath and be patient, waiting for her levels to slowly drop, after she has taken her insulin.
“I want my son to feel like managing his diabetes is as natural as brushing his teeth. I want for him to feel just as normal as his friends – while playing his hand with the cards he has been dealt.”
– Jesper, 46, father of an 11-year-old with diabetes type 1
It’s Jesper’s biggest wish for his son to think much less about his diabetes, and get to a point where managing it will feel as natural as possible.
“I want to take control of my diabetes”
– Martyna, 32, has type 1 diabetes
Martyna fainted once, because her numbers were too low. At that time she didn’t get any signs from her body telling her, she was about to pass out. She was tired, didn’t eat much and was stressed. Now, she wants to be better at taking care of herself, not skip any lunches and listen to her body, so it hopefully won’t happen again.
“I want to get in great shape again ”
– Nicolai, 29, has type 1 diabetes
Nicolai has had sports injuries for the last 10 years – which have been preventing him from working out. When not being able to be physically active, it’s not easy to take care of your health, having diabetes. Now his sports injuries are finally starting to recover – and his personal goals for the next couple of years are to get in great shape again. Read more about exercise and diabetes here!
“I want to learn to accept that I have diabetes and that it is a part of my life”
– Ann Cathrine, 36
It’s important to Ann Cathrine to accept that diabetes is a part of her life. Acceptance takes time though, and the little time you have at the doctor’s each year is not enough to help you truly accept your disease, she thinks. That’s why she has now set her mind to work on this.
“I want to measure my blood sugar levels more often and remind myself how important it is”
– Casper Olsen, 30
Casper has had diabetes since he was 9 years old, and sometimes he gets too “comfortable” with it and forgets to keep track of his blood sugar levels. That’s why Casper’s personal goal is to remember to prioritise managing his diabetes – even though he has a lot of other things going on in his life at the moment.
Keep sharing your diabetes goals with us!
